I am sick and tired of seeing hatred, bigotry, racism, Xenophobia, homophobia, sexism, white supremacy, and countless other horrendous acts being carried out in the name of Christianity.
I am exhausted with being criticized and faulted and frowned upon for identifying myself with the same belief system as millions of hateful, shameful, pardon my language but quite frankly asshole Americans.
The Trump-supporting Christians who think that expressing their faith means standing behind an idiotic, lie-spewing, hate-breeding man in the American election.
The Christian patriots who insist that all refugees are terrorists and show no sympathy, love, or even one single care to the millions of displaced people— mothers, fathers, children, infants— around the world.
The 87% of evangelical Christians who do not believe that black lives matter.
The conservative Christian tow truck drivers who leave disabled Bernie Sanders supporters stranded because they’re “obviously socialists.”
The believers who place white American supremacy, exceptionalism, and chosenness over, oh, I don’t know… reading their Bibles and actually understanding one single FREAKING thing it even says.
Find me one scripture that states that white people > black people. That rich > poor. That American > every other nationality. That Republican > Democrat. Because the way that hundreds of thousands of Christians speak and act, it almost seems as if they must be reading a completely different Bible than the rest of us Christians.
My bible says, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:7-8).
My bible says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” (Philippians 2:3-4).
My bible says, “Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.” (Hebrews 13:1-3).
My bible says, “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” (Colossians 3:12-14).
My bible says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35).
So… where’s the disconnect?
This isn’t a rhetorical question. I want answers. The world needs answers if we’re to have any hope for a brighter tomorrow.
If you’re not a Christian, and all you know about Christianity is what you’ve heard and seen from bible-bashing bigots who swear up and down that they’re good Christian men and women, but all you see from them is hatred, selfishness, pridefulness and a complete disregard for anyone and anything that doesn’t directly benefit them, please hear me when I say that isn’t what Christianity is about.
Please understand that this isn’t what we stand for. It’s not what our God wants for us and it’s not what our bible teaches.
And if you are a Christian, stop tolerating this. If we don’t, who do you expect to?
We’re in this together. All of us. I understand that you aren’t necessarily the problem, but understand that if you aren’t actively working towards solving it, well… you know, you really are a part of it.
I’m not just asking, I’m begging here. I need you. Your city or town needs you. This American election needs you. Your country needs you. Millions of helpless people need you. The world needs you.
So, where are you going to start?
